We were also less than satisfied with the seven pre-set scene modes; some cameras offer upwards of twenty. The camera performed at a fairly average level in our speed tests, with a shutter lag of just under.
Power-up was a little sluggish at 2. The W50 has quite impressive battery life, lasting over shots in our testing before needing a charge. The camera comes in a standard silver chassis, although black is also available. It has a mostly metal body and feels durable enough to take a few knocks.
The design is utilitarian for a very functional product. The rear of the unit houses the 2. The display quality was acceptable but did not stand out from the crowd. We found the controls also followed this trend. There is a function wheel which gives access to the key shooting modes, as well as the different scene settings, and the menu system controls the rest.
While we prefer dual menus for easy access to camera settings, Sony's menu is subdivided and works quite well. Reading mode: Light Dark. Login Register. Best cameras and lenses. Most cameras have some softening in the corners in macro mode evidence of the optical characteristic "curvature of field" , but the W50's blurring extends quite far into the frame.
Sometimes, severe curvature of field of this sort is evidence of the camera being asked to focus closer than its minimum focusing distance, but a series of shots with the W50 at progressively greater focal distances showed the same phenomena. Shooting at the minimum macro focal distance, the flash had a hard time throttling down, and couldn't cover the frame evenly.
Plan on using external lighting for any macro shots with the DSC-W This is the tendency for the lens to bend straight lines outward like a barrel--usually at wide angle or inward like a pincushion--usually at telephoto.
At the telephoto end, the W50's 0. Chromatic aberration is moderate at wide angle, showing about pixels of fairly bright coloration on either side of the target lines, but decreases to very low levels at telephoto focal lengths. This distortion is visible as a very slight colored fringe around the objects at the edges of the field of view on the resolution target.
Corner Sharpness Some softening in the corners of the frame at wide angle, though less distortion at telephoto. Better sharpness than average overall though. The DSC-W50 runs almost entirely on automatic. You can choose between single- or five-area autofocus or select from a handful of preset focus distances; true manual focus is impossible.
It also offers multipattern, center, and spot metering as the method for determining exposure, though you can adjust the exposure value using only exposure compensation--there's no way to select shutter speed or aperture. The camera lacks the dozens of different scene presets available on other cameras, such as the Canon PowerShot A , but it does have a nice movie mode that can shoot VGA videos at 30fps. Since the DSC-W50's lens, sensor, body design, and imaging processor are identical to those of the DSC-W30, image quality and performance will follow suit.
That model delivers pleasing performance, though it lags behind in burst mode. After a quick 1.
